Built in 1929 for the Universal Exposition, the Casa Monumental building
anchors the crossing between Avinguda de Mistral and Avinguda del Paral·lel. It
is a work of some urban significance, designed by architect Josep Pujol, who
resolved this major intersection with a circular chamfer. Originally, the
volume was crowned by a small temple on the roof, which was removed over the
years. The commission was to renovate the apartment located on the seventh
floor. Right beneath the drum of the dome that supported the temple.
A moderate intervention was carried out, acting only on retaining walls,
without affecting the stability of the main load-bearing walls through which
the drum transfers its weight. The goal was to differentiate two areas: along
the façade, the bedrooms, living room, and dining room; along the interior
patios, the bathrooms and kitchen. The old corridor disappears, now converted
into a spacious shower with natural light. The materiality of the home seeks to
echo the building’s exterior image - of green joinery and a façade of whites
and ivories - exposing the traditional Catalan vault and hydraulic tiles
wherever we could recover them.

Not even a hundred years have passed since the Carboner shacks stood
here; the pedestrians of the Camí Vell de la Creu Coberta; the merchants of the
Fira de Bellcaire. All that happened in this very place where we now leaned out
during our visits. Although the temple no longer exists, we find no obstacles
to our contemplation. On its balconies we tried to augur what it is
the birds are singing.
